i'll be seeing you...

Jo Stafford has been one of my all-time favorites. I got that from my uncle. he had a collection of 78 rpm records from when he worked at the Lyon-Healy store in downtown Chicago before and at the beginning of WWII. I now have his collection. Jo Stafford was one of his favorites; I often thought he had a crush on her.

she provided a distinct service to the service members during WWII. the soldiers fondly referred to her as "GI Jo". Through her music, she made an unbearable situation into a place where they could feel closer to home.

imagine my shock when i saw her obituary in the Sun-Times today. i believed that she had died long ago. she died yesterday at the age of 90! what a long and wonderful life.

below is one of the songs that kept the guys/gals during WWII closer to home.

I'll be seeing you
from Right This Way
performed by - Jo Stafford
music - Sammy Fain
lyric - Irving Kahal

I'll be seeing you
In all the old familiar places
That this heart of mine embraces
All day through.

In that small cafe;
The park across the way;
The children's carousel;
The chestnut trees;
The wishin' well.

I'll be seeing you
In every lovely summer's day;
In every thing that's light and gay.
I'll always think of you that way.

I'll find you
In the morning sun
And when the night is new.
I'll be looking at the moon,
But I'll be seeing you.

I'll be seeing you
In every lovely summer's day;
In every thing that's light and gay.
I'll always think of you that way.

I'll find you
In the morning sun
And when the night is new.
I'll be looking at the moon,
But I'll be seeing you.

Sometimes When We Touch...

written & sung by Dan Hill

You ask me if I love you
And I choke on my reply
I'd rather hurt you honestly
Than mislead you with a lie
And who am I to judge you
On what you say or do?
I'm only just beginning to see the real you

And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides

Romance and all its strategy
Leaves me battling with my pride
But through the insecurity
Some tenderness survives
I'm just another writer
Still trapped within my truth
A hesitant prize fighter
Still trapped within my youth

And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides

At times I'd like to break you
And drive you to your knees
At times I'd like to break through
And hold you endlessly

At times I understand you
And I know how hard you've tried
I've watched while love commands you
And I've watched love pass you by

At times I think we're drifters
Still searching for a friend
A brother or a sister
But then the passion flares again

And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides

mamma mia...

Mamma Mia
written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson
Lead vocals shared by Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad.

I've been cheated by you since i don't know when. So I made up my mind, it must come to an end
Look at me now, will I ever learn
I don't know how but I suddenly lose control
There's a fire within my soul
Just one look and I can hear a bell ring
One more look and I forget everything.

Ooooh Ooooh,
Mamma mia, here I go again
My my, how can I resist you
Mamma mia, does it show again
My my, just how much I've missed you
Yes, I've been brokenhearted
Blue since the day we parted
Why, why did I ever let you go
Mamma mia, now I really know
My my, I should not have let you go

I've been angry and sad about things that you do
I can't count all the times that I've told you we're through
And when you go, when you slam the door
I think that you know you won't be away too long
You know that I'm not that strong
Just one look and I can hear a bell ring
One more look and I forget everything

Ooooh Ooooh,
Mamma mia, here I go again
My my, how can I resist you
Mamma mia, does it show again
My my, just how much I've missed you
Yes, I've been brokenhearted

Blue since the day we parted

Why, why did I ever let you go
Mamma mia, even if I say
Bye bye, leave me now or never
Mamma mia, its a game we play
Bye bye doesnt mean forever

Mamma mia, here I go again
My my, how can I resist you
Mamma mia, does it show again
My my, just how much I've missed you

Yes, I've been brokenhearted
Blue since the day we parted
Why, why did I ever let you go
Mamma mia, now I really know
My my, I could never let you go

though i've very seldom liked much that Meryl Streep has done, i can't wait to see the film. it looks like fun...

Of Thee We Sing...

and yet, there are people who still would legislate discrimination and inequality for some. it's almost 60 years since Marion Anderson sang at the Lincoln Memorial, putting the status quo on its ear. we've come a long way, but not all the way...

yet...
