music is probably the most important thing in our lives, at least in mine. i wake each morning with a song playing in my head. i connect songs to things that happen, people i meet, and events that occur. a song can bring back a memory - good or bad. i connect music to every part of my life.
I'm dreaming of a white christmas, just like the ones I used to know Where the treetops glisten and children listen to hear sleigh bells in the snow
I'm dreaming of a white christmas, just like the ones I used to know Where the treetops glisten and children listen to hear sleigh bells in the snow
I'm dreaming of a white christmas, with every christmas card I write May your days be merry and bright, and may all your christmases be white
I'm dreaming of a white christmas, just like the ones I used to know May your days be merry and bright, and may all your christmases be white
I'm dreaming of a white christmas, with every christmas card I write May your days be merry and bright, and may all your christmases be white
May your days be merry and bright, and may all your christmases be white
And may all your christmases be white (All your christmases be white) And may all your christmases be white (All your christmases be white) And may all your christmases be (All your christmases be white) (All your christmases be white)
Vera and Mame: [singing] We'll always be bosom buddies, Friends, sisters and pals; We'll always be bosom buddies, If life should reject you, There's me to protect you. Vera: If I say that your tongue is vicious, Mame: If I call you uncouth; Vera and Mame: It's simply that who else but a bosom buddy Will sit down and tell you the truth. Vera: [speaking] Tho' now and again I'm aware that my candid opinion may sting, Mame: Tho' often my frank observation might scald; I've been meanin' to tell you for years You should keep your hair natural like mine. Vera: If I kept my hair natural like yours, I'd be bald. [singing] But darling, Vera and Mame: We'll always be dear companions, Vera: My crony, Mame: My mate; Vera and Mame: We'll always be harmonizing, Vera: Orphan Annie and Sandy, Vera and Mame: Like Amos and Andy. Vera: If I say that your sense of style's as far as off as your youth; It's simply that who else but a bosom buddy Will tell you the whole stinkin' truth. Mame: [speaking] Each time that a critic has written, "Your voice is the voice of a frog!" Straight to your side to defend you I rush; You know that I'm there ev'ry time that the world makes and unkind remark. When they say "Vera Charles is the world's greatest lush!" [singing] It hurts me! Vera: And if I say your fangs are showing, Mame, pull in your claws, It's simply that who else but a bosom buddy Will notice the obvious flaws! Mame: [speaking] I feel it's my duty to tell you it's time to adjust to your age; You try to be "Peg O' My Heart", when you're "Lady Macbeth." Exactly how old are you, Vera? The truth! Vera: Well, how old do you think? Mame: I'd say somewhere in between forty and the death! Vera and Mame: [singing] But sweetie, Vera: I'll always be Alice Toklas, If you'll be Gertrude Stein. And tho' I'll admit I've dished you, I've gossiped and gloated, But I'm so devoted. Mame: And if I say that sex and guts made you into a star, It's simply that who else but a bosom buddy Will tell you how rotten you are. Vera and Mame: Just turn your bosom buddy For aid and affection, For help and direction, For loyalty, love and for sooth! Remember that who else but a bosom buddy Will sit down and level And give you the devil, Will sit down and tell you the truth!
There are places i'll remember All my life though some have changed Some forever not for better Some have gone and some remain All these places have their moments With lovers and friends i still can recall Some are dead and some are living In my life i've loved them all
But of all these friends and lovers There is no one compares with you And these memories lose their meaning When i think of love as something new Though i know i'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know i'll often stop and think about them In my life i love you more
Though i know i'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know i'll often stop and think about them In my life i love you more In my life i love you more
Old friends, Old friends Sat on their park bench Like bookends. A newspaper blown though the grass Falls on the round toes Of the high shoes Of the old friends.
Old friends, Winter companions, The old men Lost in their overcoats, Waiting for the sunset. The sounds of the city, Sifting through trees, Settle like dust On the shoulders Of the old friends.
Can you imagine us Years from today, Sharing a park bench quietly? How terribly strange To be seventy. Old friends, Memory brushes the same years Silently sharing the same fears
Bookends
Time it was and what a time it was it was, A time of innocence a time of confidences.
Long ago it must be, I have a photograph Preserve your memories, they're all that's left you
Feeling Groovy The 59th Street Bridge Song
Slow down, you move too fast. You got to make the morning last. Just kicking down the cobble stones. Looking for fun and feelin' groovy. Hello lamppost, What cha knowing? I've come to watch your flowers growing. Ain't cha got no rhymes for me? Doot-in' doo-doo, Feelin' groovy.
Got no deeds to do, No promises to keep. I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep. Let the morning time drop all its petals on me. Life, I love you, All is groovy.
for Carol, Lorraine, Sharon & Ed - myold friends of 40 years...
with all the aches and pains amassed over those 40 years, we still are feeling groovy...
the video is from the movie Apocalypse Now in which the song was used. an interesting story behind the story - martin sheen not only was higher than god when filming this sequence but he was also having a heart attack...
this has always been one of my favorite song by the doors. morrison is one of my heroes. for years after his death i refused to listen to his music because of the waste of life, though i would visit his grave at Cimetière du Père-Lachaise every time i was in Paris. i know... weird...
found this lyric site that has a lyric scroller. you can adjust the speed of the scrolling by clicking on the + or -. let me know what you think...
I held you close to me once in a distant dream, far from the shores of my fear. I sailed on the ocean where all I imagined could happen, and now you are here.
It's so hard to touch what is out of our hands, to know and to trust what the heart understands.
Only the ones who believe ever see what they dream, ever dream what comes true.
Life gives us magic and life brings us tragedy. Everyone suffers some loss. Still we have faith in it, childlike hope. There's a reason that outweighs the cost.
And gravity throws all these rules in our way. And sometimes the sprit refuses to play.
Only the ones who believe ever see what they dream, ever dream what comes true.
And oh, love, turn me around in your arms. And in this dream we share let us not miss one kiss.
And add my regrets to the tears in the rain for that's what the color of roses contain.
Only the ones who believe ever see what they dream, ever dream, ever dream what comes true.
i didn't even realize that she was still alive. i remember hearing the voice at an early age and even then i knew there was something special about it. her vocal range was beyond belief - five octave ranges...
Sweet Georgia Brown Ella Fitzgerald written by kenneth casey & maceo pinkard
No gal made has got a shade on sweet Georgia Brown Two left feet but oh so neat, has sweet Georgia Brown They all sigh and wanna die for sweet Georgia Brown I'll tell you why, you know I don't lie... much
It's been said she knocks 'em dead when she lands in town Since she came why it's a shame how she coos 'em down Fellers she can't get are fellers she ain't met Georgia claimed her, Georgia named her Sweet Georgia Brown
what a voice! she is the quintessential queen of jazz and scat. it was difficult deciding what song to choose, but this one really shows her enthusiasm and range. incredible...
after the last entry, i decided to post my favorite song from the musical Hair. the phrase dirty little war i used in the previous post is from the lyric.
it's quite the anti-war song...
and anti-racist, if you listen carefully to the meaning behind it...
Three-Five-Zero-Zero from Hair the film version by James Rado and Gerome Ragni
Ripped open by metal explosion Caught in barbed wire Fireball Bullet shock Bayonet Electricity Shrapnel Throbbing meat Electronic data processing Black uniforms Bare feet, carbines Mail-order rifles Shoot the muscles 256 Viet Cong captured 256 Viet Cong captured
Prisoners in Niggertown It's a dirty little war Three Five Zero Zero Take weapons up and begin to kill Watch the long long armies drifting home
i want to believe that the hope and dreams we carried and believed during the 1960's have a chance to be reignited next Tuesday.
the kids today, though they don't realize it and would probably deny it, are actually influenced in their hope for a better and brighter future by the ground that was laid with the battles of the 1968 Democratic Convention and the protestations against a dirty little war in Southeast Asia.
i want to believe. i hear the words in the change that Barack Obama wants to bring about. it has been a recurring dream for centuries of many men and women - the Martin Luthers, the Martin Luther Kings, the John XXII's, the Abraham Lincolns, the Susan B. Anthony's - only to be dashed by those afraid of loosing control and, most important, power. sadly, the power they fear loosing, they really don't have. no one really does...

I'll Stand by You sung by - Patti LaBelle Songwriters: Billy Steinberg; Tom Kellt; and Chrissie Hynde
Oh, why you look so sad? Tears are in your eyes Come on and come to me now Don't be ashamed to cry Let me see you through 'cause I've seen the dark side too When the night falls on you You don't know what to do Nothing you confess Could make me love you less
I'll stand by you I'll stand by you Won't let nobody hurt you I'll stand by you
So if you're mad, get mad Don't hold it all inside Come on and talk to me now Hey, what you got to hide? I get angry too Well I'm a lot like you When you're standing at the crossroads And don't know which path to choose Let me come along 'cause even if you're wrong
I'll stand by you I'll stand by you Won't let nobody hurt you I'll stand by you Take me in, into your darkest hour And I'll never desert you I'll stand by you
And when... When the night falls on you, baby You're feeling all alone You won't be on your own
I'll stand by you I'll stand by you Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you Take me in, into your darkest hour And I'll never desert you I'll stand by you I'll stand by you Won't let nobody hurt you I'll stand by you Won't let nobody hurt you I'll stand by you
man, she's just wonderful. the voice... the technique... makes ya melt like honey...
Take a Walk on the Wild Side Lou Reed - lyric & vocal
Holly came from miami f.l.a. Hitch-hiked her way across the u.s.a.
Plucked her eyebrows on the way Shaved her leg and then he was a she She says, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side Said, hey honey, take a walk on the wild side
Candy came from out on the island In the backroom she was everybodys darling
But she never lost her head Even when she was given head She says, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side Said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side And the coloured girls go
Little joe never once gave it away Everybody had to pay and pay
A hustle here and a hustle there New york city is the place where they said Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side I said hey joe, take a walk on the wild side
Sugar plum fairy came and hit the streets Lookin for soul food and a place to eat
Went to the apollo You should have seen him go go go They said, hey sugar, take a walk on the wild side I said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side All right, huh
Jackie is just speeding away Thought she was james dean for a day
Then I guess she had to crash Valium would have helped that dash She said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side I said, hey honey, take a walk on the wild side And the coloured girls say
the story has been that the song is about drag queens. i'm not sure, but it could be with some of the DQ's i've known. what i do know is musically the song is a great mix of different styles, including jazz. the sax at the very end is great.
oh, and i've been accused by African-American friends that i looovvvve my coloured girl singers just like the song says... Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Jennifer Holiday, The Pointer Sisters, Tina Turner... And the coloured girls go Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
okay, you're next gettin' a slew of my girls. i'm in the mood...

the song is from the movie Moulin Rouge. The montage accompanying it are scenes from the German soap opera Verboten Liebe [Forbidden Love] that is taking the internet, English speaking countries and Europe by storm, specifically the story line of Oliver and Christian, known to all as Ollian.
Never knew I could feel like this Like I've never seen the sky before Want to vanish inside your kiss Everyday I love you more and more Listen to my heart, can you hear it sings Telling me to give you everything Seasons may change winter to spring But I love you until the end of time
Come what may, come what may I will love you until my dying day
Suddenly the world seems such a perfect place Suddenly it moves with such a perfect grace Suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste It all revolves around you
And there's no mountain too high no river too wide Sing out this song and I'll be there by your side Storm clouds may gather and stars may collide But I love you until the end of time
Come what may, come what may I will love you until my dying day Oh come what may, come what may I will love you
Suddenly the world seems such a perfect place...
Come what may, come what may I will love you until my dying day.
it is not only the story of Ollian that is interesting; the entire show has become a must see in Germany and there are many of the other characters that interact with Christian and Oliver on the program; but it is their storyline that has captured people's hearts and interest.
you can catch up on most of the story here through a nonstop capture and then catch new episodes here as they are posted with English subtitles. you will become hooked...
Verboten Liebe and Ollian has taken such a hold in English speaking countries that next week there is a live "virtual" online chat with Thor Schölermann (Christian) and Jo Weil (Oliver) next Tuesday, September 30th. you have to sign up to be part. if you're interested go to Meet Thore Schölermann and Jo Weil.
below is Come What May with scenes from the original movie Moulin Rouge
The Sisters of Mercy Oh the sisters of mercy, they are not departed or gone. They were waiting for me when I thought that I just can't go on. And they brought me their comfort and later they brought me this song. Oh I hope you run into them, you who've been travelling so long.
Yes you who must leave everything that you cannot control. It begins with your family, but soon it comes around to your soul. Well I've been where you're hanging, I think I can see how you're pinned: When you're not feeling holy, your loneliness says that you've sinned.
Well they lay down beside me, I made my confession to them. They touched both my eyes and I touched the dew on their hem. If your life is a leaf that the seasons tear off and condemn they will bind you with love that is graceful and green as a stem.
When I left they were sleeping, I hope you run into them soon. Don't turn on the lights, you can read their address by the moon. And you won't make me jealous if I hear that they sweetened your night: We weren't lovers like that and besides it would still be all right, We weren't lovers like that and besides it would still be all right.
i was first introduced to this song by the Judy Collins version many years ago. it's a haunting melody and lyric. in the version above, played and sung by Leonard Cohen, if you listen carefully, you will hear riffs from what i consider his consummate song - Suzanne. here's a really interesting video that i found of the song
wow, i didn't realize it has been so long since i posted. life has been really busy. i haven't even done a lot of posts over at the main site.
anyway, this song has always been one of my favorites. it actually helped me through a major break-up when it first came out. after the lyric you're going to find a special version of it. i used it once at the beginning of the school year at a workshop with my teachers. they loved it.
First I was afraid I was petrified Kept thinking I could never live without you by my side But I spent so many nights thinking how you did me wrong I grew strong I learned how to carry on and so you're back from outer space I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face I should have changed my stupid lock I should have made you leave your key If I had known for just one second you'd be back to bother me
Go on now go walk out the door just turn around now 'cause you're not welcome anymore weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye you think I'd crumble you think I'd lay down and die Oh no, not I I will survive as long as i know how to love I know I will stay alive I've got all my life to live I've got all my love to give and I'll survive I will survive
It took all the strength I had not to fall apart kept trying hard to mend the pieces of my broken heart and I spent oh so many nights just feeling sorry for myself I used to cry Now I hold my head up high and you see me somebody new I'm not that chained up little person still in love with you and so you felt like dropping in and just expect me to be free now I'm saving all my loving for someone who's loving me
yes, i know, it's been awhile. i've been incredibly busy with all the publicity, program planning and design for my friend's recital later this month [so i have been doing something musical, you see] and with my closest friend being in the hospital going back and forth to be with her. on top of that, the charitable organization, HEDAC, of which i'm a board member and secretary, is in the midst of planning our big annual fundraising event. life is great when it is busy and you're doing things you like...
well, here is something very, very different. it's an instructional video on how to design and build a very special cake - very special. what caught my ear is the music they chose for background. it's Rossini'sLa Danza. most people think of Rossini for opera, and he is most noted for it, but he also wrote a lot of other things. as a matter of fact, Rossini lived for 76 years; he wrote 39 of the most famous operas in repertoire; yet, he stopped writing operas when he was 37 years old!
there are a lot of stories as to why he stopped writing opera. my favorite [and it's probably not true] is that he became tired of his mistresses and other singers bugging him to write things for them. in fact, he often rewrote lyric to music, stealing from himself quite often, each one better than the previous.
Jo Stafford has been one of my all-time favorites. I got that from my uncle. he had a collection of 78 rpm records from when he worked at the Lyon-Healy store in downtown Chicago before and at the beginning of WWII. I now have his collection. Jo Stafford was one of his favorites; I often thought he had a crush on her.
she provided a distinct service to the service members during WWII. the soldiers fondly referred to her as "GI Jo". Through her music, she made an unbearable situation into a place where they could feel closer to home.
imagine my shock when i saw her obituary in the Sun-Times today. i believed that she had died long ago. she died yesterday at the age of 90! what a long and wonderful life.
below is one of the songs that kept the guys/gals during WWII closer to home.
I'll be seeing you In all the old familiar places That this heart of mine embraces All day through.
In that small cafe; The park across the way; The children's carousel; The chestnut trees; The wishin' well.
I'll be seeing you In every lovely summer's day; In every thing that's light and gay. I'll always think of you that way.
I'll find you In the morning sun And when the night is new. I'll be looking at the moon, But I'll be seeing you.
I'll be seeing you In every lovely summer's day; In every thing that's light and gay. I'll always think of you that way.
I'll find you In the morning sun And when the night is new. I'll be looking at the moon, But I'll be seeing you.
You ask me if I love you And I choke on my reply I'd rather hurt you honestly Than mislead you with a lie And who am I to judge you On what you say or do? I'm only just beginning to see the real you
And sometimes when we touch The honesty's too much And I have to close my eyes and hide I wanna hold you til I die Til we both break down and cry I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides
Romance and all its strategy Leaves me battling with my pride But through the insecurity Some tenderness survives I'm just another writer Still trapped within my truth A hesitant prize fighter Still trapped within my youth
And sometimes when we touch The honesty's too much And I have to close my eyes and hide I wanna hold you til I die Til we both break down and cry I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides
At times I'd like to break you And drive you to your knees At times I'd like to break through And hold you endlessly
At times I understand you And I know how hard you've tried I've watched while love commands you And I've watched love pass you by
At times I think we're drifters Still searching for a friend A brother or a sister But then the passion flares again
And sometimes when we touch The honesty's too much And I have to close my eyes and hide I wanna hold you til I die Til we both break down and cry I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides
Mamma Mia written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson Lead vocals shared by Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad.
I've been cheated by you since i don't know when. So I made up my mind, it must come to an end Look at me now, will I ever learn I don't know how but I suddenly lose control There's a fire within my soul Just one look and I can hear a bell ring One more look and I forget everything.
Ooooh Ooooh, Mamma mia, here I go again My my, how can I resist you Mamma mia, does it show again My my, just how much I've missed you Yes, I've been brokenhearted Blue since the day we parted Why, why did I ever let you go Mamma mia, now I really know My my, I should not have let you go
I've been angry and sad about things that you do I can't count all the times that I've told you we're through And when you go, when you slam the door I think that you know you won't be away too long You know that I'm not that strong Just one look and I can hear a bell ring One more look and I forget everything
Ooooh Ooooh, Mamma mia, here I go again My my, how can I resist you Mamma mia, does it show again My my, just how much I've missed you Yes, I've been brokenhearted
Blue since the day we parted
Why, why did I ever let you go Mamma mia, even if I say Bye bye, leave me now or never Mamma mia, its a game we play Bye bye doesnt mean forever
Mamma mia, here I go again My my, how can I resist you Mamma mia, does it show again My my, just how much I've missed you
Yes, I've been brokenhearted Blue since the day we parted Why, why did I ever let you go Mamma mia, now I really know My my, I could never let you go
though i've very seldom liked much that Meryl Streep has done, i can't wait to see the film. it looks like fun...
and yet, there are people who still would legislate discrimination and inequality for some. it's almost 60 years since Marion Anderson sang at the Lincoln Memorial, putting the status quo on its ear. we've come a long way, but not all the way...
It seems we stood and talked like this before We looked at each other in the same way then But i can't remember where or when The clothes you're wearing and the clothes you wore The smile you are smiling you were smiling then But i can't remember where or when Some things that happen for the first time Seem to be happening again And so it seems that we have met before And laughed before And loved before But who knows where or when
Some of those things that seem to happen for the first time Seem to be happening again And so it seems that we have met before And laughed before And loved before But who knows where or when.
known mostly for pop/rock music, George Michael put together the album featured in the video above of standards from the the 1930's-1990's that show the versatility of his talent. his version of Roxanne written by Sting and first performed by The Police is a favorite. you can find it here.
Crazy world Full of crazy contridictions, like a child. First you drive me wild, and then you win my heart With your wicked art. One minute tender, gentle, then tempermental as a summer storm. Just when I believe your heart's getting warmer, you're cold, and you're cruel. And I like a fool, try to cope, try to hang on, to hope.
Crazy world Every day the same old roller coaster ride. But I've got my pride, I won't give in. Even though I know I'll never win. Oh, how I love this crazy world.
You with the sad eyes don't be discouraged oh I realize it's hard to take courage in a world full of people you can lose sight of it all and the darkness inside you can make you fell so small
But I see your true colors shining through I see your true colors and that's why I love you so don't be afraid to let them show your true colors true colors are beautiful like a rainbow
Show me a smile then don't be unhappy, can't remember when I last saw you laughing if this world makes you crazy and you've taken all you can bear you call me up because you know I'll be there
And I'll see your true colors shining through I see your true colors and that's why I love you so don't be afraid to let them show your true colors true colors are beautiful like a rainbow.
If this world makes you crazy And you’ve taken all you can bear You call me up Because you know I’ll be there
And I’ll see your true colors Shining through I see your true colors And that’s why I love you So don’t be afraid to let them show
Your true colors True colors True colors Shining through
I see your true colors And that’s why I love you So don’t be afraid to let them show Your true colors True colors are beautiful, Like a rainbow
[Trans: Ziggy, his name is Ziggy. I’m crazy about him. He’s a boy like no others, But I love him; it’s not my fault Even if I know That he will never love me.
Ziggy, his name is Ziggy. I’m crazy about him. The first time I saw him. I threw myself at him on the street. I simply told him That I wanted him.
It was four o’clock in the morning. I was alone and I needed To talk to someone He told me: come on let's go for coffee And we told each other about our lives. We laughed, and we cried.
Ziggy, his name is Ziggy He’s my only friend. In his head there’s only music. He sells discs in a boutique. We could say he’s living in another galaxy.
Every night, he takes me dancing. To very, very gay places Where he has lots of friends. Yes, I know, he likes boys. I need to realize it's hopeless. I should try to forget him, , , but
Ziggy, his name is Ziggy. I’m crazy about him. He’s a boy like no others, But I love him; it’s not my fault Even if I know That he will never love me.]
[Gentle is the wind, Calm is the wave, And every one of the elements Answer warmly To our (your) desire.]
quite probably the most beautiful trio, if not just the measures of music, that Mozart wrote. five lines conveying longing, despair and heartbreak because a loved one has left.
i may have mentioned in a previous post that i had the great fortune of spending an evening with Christa Ludwig (she is in the dark wig) and her husband a number of years ago. we laughed the entire evening.
What a lovely trip I'm feeling so fresh and alive And I'm so glad to arrive It's all so grand It's easy to see you don't need a palace To feel like Alice in Wonderland
Back in Ohio where I come from I've done a lot of dreamin' and I've travelled some But I never thought I'd see the day When I ever took a ride on the Santa Fe (wanna take a ride on the Santa Fe)
I would lean across my window sill And hear the whistle echoin' across the hill Then I'd watch the lights till they fade away On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe
What a thrill (what a great big wonderful thrill) With the wheels a-singin' "westward ho" Right from the day I heard them start 'Cross the Kansas plains from New Mexico I guess I've got a little gypsy in my heart
When I'm old and grey and settled down If I ever get a chance to sneak away from town Then I'll spend my busman's holiday On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe
All aboard! (we came across the country lickety-split) (rollin' ninety miles an hour) I can't believe I'm here at last Woo-oo-ooo! (when you go travellin', it's best for you to take the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe!) I can't believe that anything could go so fast
Then you pull that throttle, whistle blows A-huffin' and a-puffin' and away she goes All aboard for California*, hey! On the Atchison (on the Atchison) On the Atchison, Topeka (on the Atchison, Topeka) On the Atchison, Topeka (on the Atchison, Topeka) On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe
I'm always chasing rainbows, Watching clouds drifting by, My schemes are just like all my dreams, Ending in the sky. Some fellows look and find the sunshine, I always look and find the rain. Some fellows make a winning sometime, But I never even make a gain, believe me, I'm always chasing rainbows, Waiting to find a little bluebird in vain.
An interesting background note on this song: The music is credited to Harry Carroll, although the melody is actually adapted from Fantaisie-Impromptu by Frédéric Chopin. The lyrics were written by Joseph McCarthy, and the song was published in 1917 and introduced in the Broadway show Oh, Look! which opened in March, 1918. The song was sung in the show by The Dolly Sisters and was subsequently featured in a movie entitled The Dolly Sisters, released in September, 1945, where it was sung by John Payne. from Wikipedia
Money makes the world go round The world go round, the world go round Money makes the world go round It makes the world go round
A mark, a yen, a buck or a pound A buck or a pound, a buck or a pound Is all that makes the world go round That clinking, clanking sound Can make the world go round
If you happen to be rich and you feel like a night's entertainment You can pay for a gay escapade If you happen to be rich, and alone, and you need A companion, you can ring tingaling for the maid
If you happen to be rich and you find you are left by your lover Tho you moan and you groan quite a lot You can take it on the chin Call a cab, and begin to recover on your fourteen carat yacht
Money makes the world go round The world go round, the world go round Money makes the world go round Of that we both are sure On being poor
When you haven't any coal in the stove and you freeze In the winter and you curse to the wind at your fate When you haven't any shoes on your feet and your coat's thin as paper And you look thirty pounds underweight
When you go to get a word of advice from the fat little pastor He will tell you to love evermore But when hunger comes to rap, rat-a-tat, rat-a-tat At the window, see how love flies out the door
For money makes the world go round The world go round, the world go round Money makes the world go round The clinking, clanking sound of money
Money, money, money, money, money, money, money Get a little, get a little Money, money, money, money Mark, a yen, a buck or a pound That clinking, clanking, clunking sound Is all that makes the world go round It makes the world go round
without knowing the language, just the music conveys the sadness and the loss, "Since you left. here is a loose translation of the first verse as an example.
Since the shadows have won. Since the mountains no longer exist With winds taking away your memory Because I have to learn everything all over again Since the memories are failing me of all our dreams and life that "Might have been"
Jean-Jacques Goldman has long been one of my favorite singer-songwriters from France. his music is story-telling; the type of song I like the best. though he is not known in the U.S., he is a huge star in France and Europe. actually, people have heard his music in this country. Celine Dion is not only a close friend of his, but she sings a lot of his songs on her albums and shows, albeit in English most of the time.
one of my dreams is to see him perform live in France someday. i've always just missed him in the past.
on that note, let me share one more of his videos. this one is with Carole Fredericks and Michael Jones. the three performed together until 1997 when Carole decided to try for a solo career. sadly, she died of a heart attack in 2001. She was originally from Boston.
the name of the song is A nos actes manques - All the things we missed doing...
When you're standing on the edge of nowhere There's only one way up So your heart's got to go there Through the darkest night See the light shine bright When hero's fall, in love or war They live forever
[Chorus:] This is a song - for the lonely Can you hear me tonight? For the broken hearted, battle scarred I'll be by your side And this is a song - for the lonely When your dreams won't come true Can you hear this prayer? 'Cause someone's there for you
Well, love don't need a reason She can pick you up Or leave you bleeding I've seen a strong man cry I know the reason why We all forgive, we all forget We just keep believing
[Chorus]
So let it find you Wherever you may go I'm right beside you You don't have to look no more You don't have to look no more, oh no
[Chorus]
It's gonna be alright It's gonna be alright It's gonna be alright
This is a song A song for the lonely And that's not you only Through the darkest night You're gonna see the light
Love don't need a reason Just to leave you bleeding
Can you hear this prayer? Someone's there
This is a song - for the lonely Can you hear me tonight? For the broken hearted, battle scarred I'll be by your side And this is a song For the lonely
Time to Say Goodbye Russell Watson & Hayley Westenra from the new Russell Watson album Outside In
This is from Russell Watson's newest album, Outside In. It was released last November in England and Europe. There has been no release in the U.S. as yet. I ordered the import from amazon.com.
There are no lyrics that I could find for his version with Hayley Westenra nor a video. I found the one above that someone put together with visuals from Phantom of the Opera.
For anyone not aware, Russell Watson was recording an album at the end of 2006, Love affair, in Los Angeles and became extremely ill with debilitating headaches and had to be rushed to the hospital. They discovered a brain tumor that was removed. A year later, the tumor returned having regrown and another surgery had to be performed along with radiotherapy. He spent time in rehab. He is scheduled to tour in the UK this summer.
The Love Affair album was not completed but was replaced with Outside In, as far as I could tell. You can find out more about Russell Watson and his voyage on his website - here.
I don't know why Im frightened I know my way around here The cardboard trees, the painted scenes, the sound here. Yes a world to rediscover, But I'm not in any hurry And I need a moment.
The whispered conversations in overcrowded hallways, The atmosphere as thrilling here as always Feel the early morning madness Feel the magic in the making Why everything's as if we never said goodbye.
I've spent so many mornings Just trying to resist you I'm trembling now You can't know how I've missed you, Missed the fairy-tail adventures In this ever-spinning playground We were young together.
I'm coming out of make-up The lights already burning, Not long until the cameras will start turning And the early morning madness And the magic in the making... Yes, everything is as if we never said goodbye.
I don't want to be alone that's all in the past, This world's waited long enough, I've come home at last!
And this time will be bigger, And brighter than we knew it. So watch me fly, we all know I can do it... Could I stop my hand from shaking? Has there ever been a moment with so much to live for?
The whispered conversations in overcrowded hallways, So much to say, not just today, but always. We'll have early morning madness. We'll have magic in the making. Yes, everything is as if we never said goodbye... Oh, please don't ever ever make me say goodbye!
To sail on a dream on a crystal clear ocean To ride on the crest of a wild raging storm To work in the service of life and the living In search of the answers to questions unknown To be part of the movement and part of the growing Part of beginning to understand
Aye, Calypso, the places you’ve been to The things that you’ve shown us The stories you tell Aye, Calypso, I sing to your spirit The men who have served you So long and so well
Like the dolphin who guides you You bring us beside you To light up the darkness and show us the way For though we are strangers in your silent world To live on the land we must learn from the sea To be true as the tide And free as the wind-swell Joyful and loving in letting it be
Aye, Calypso, the places you’ve been to The things that you’ve shown us The stories you tell Aye, Calypso, I sing to your spirit The men who have served you So long and so well
Aye, Calypso, the places you’ve been to The things that you’ve shown us The stories you tell Aye, Calypso, I sing to your spirit The men who have served you So long and so well
